about

'Raqqama' is the the debut EP of italian duo Outis, formed by Caterina and Davide. The two musicians originally from Sicily started making music together in 2019 while living in Turin. From this personal and artistic relationship emanates a music mixing Ambient IDM traditions with techno and UK Garage drawing influences from contemporaries such as Jon Hopkins, Four Tet, Rival Consoles, Nathan Fake, or even Max Cooper.

But Outis draws their primary inspiration from their native Sicily, giving all its originality to their music: “the choice of the songs' titles is a tribute to the Sicilian dialect, a real spoken language that hides some unique words that cannot be translated into Italian or English. The terms chosen have a strong connection with the evocative images of Sicily, both as an intrinsic meaning and as melancholy memories of something that was distant at that time and that represented, even if mentally, a return to our origins.” ‘Raqqama' was composed while the couple was living outside Sicily and especially far from the sea. This distance influenced the choice of a dialogical relationship with Sicily and the marine world.

‘Raqqama' inspired French artist-photographer Louise Mutrel to design and create a serie of photos printed on an Uchiwa's (a traditionnal Japanes fan) bamboo structure, an original medium she knows from her travels in Japan. This object makes a direct link between the aquatic music of Outis, and the work of the artist-photographer anchored in the movement of travel. Louise Mutrel graduated from the École nationale supérieure de photographie in Arles in 2019. Her work explores colors and textures through risograph printing.
